Anita Dobson blew viewers away last night as she popped up in ITV’s new detective drama The Long Call, but only after they managed to recognise her.
The Long Call is based on Ann Cleeves’ best-selling novel, and will be airing every night this week, starring Ben Aldridge as Detective Inspector Matthew Venn who returns to Devon with his husband after being shunned by his family over his sexuality.
His old church also outcast Matthew, as well as his old neighbours.
Already, the drama has one huge praise for its portrayal of a gay leading detective, but amid all the rave reviews there were heaps of viewers that were stunned after realising Anita starred as Grace, a woman in her sixties who ran away to Devon and married manipulative church elder Dennis Stephenson.
Yes, that really is Angie Watts, but viewers couldn’t quite believe it.
One wrote: ‘Wow! Excellent start. What a cast… did not recognise Anita Dobson!’ while another followed: ‘ Did not know that was Anita Dobson #TheLongCall’
Another particularly impressed fan, tweeted: ‘It’s looking promising so far, roll on the next ep! Looking at the credits I saw Anita Dobson‘s name listed & thought it must be a ref. for future eps; I had to rewind to check and sure enough there she was..her current role is a far cry from the glam Angie Watts!!’
‘Wait a minute I’ve just realised that was Anita Dobson #thelongcall,’ said another.
Anita explained Grace carries a lot of emotional baggage and was subsequently intentionally made to look exhausted.
‘Grace is a sad, wretched woman whose life has dribbled away from her,’ she said.
‘She is so beaten down and repressed and, possibly, chronically abused – not physically, but mentally – by her husband, Dennis, that she doesn’t really know how she even feels about anything and she doesn’t know how to form proper relationships because she’s never had the opportunity to do so.
‘All those endless years of being without a proper voice, without being able to express yourself either verbally or physically – I mean, those clothes, for a start! It does something to a person.’
The Long Call continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
