In the most unexpected news of the day, Iceland has spoofed the John Lewis Christmas 2021 advert with a new Space Raider-themed clip – and we honestly don’t know what to believe anymore.
The John Lewis campaign, titled Unexpected Guest, launched in the early hours of the morning and sees space traveller Skye come crash-landing to earth near the home of 14-year-old Nathan at the height of festivities.
However, just hours after it launched, Iceland has released its own take on the clip – only this time, Skye has been entirely replaced by a frozen potato shaped like an alien.
The potato-themed mash-up sees Nathan walk into the forest and discover that the mysterious traveller has changed into a frozen Space Raider.
The clip then features the caption: ‘For a Christmas as magical as your first…Eat An Alien.’
Of all the things we thought we’d see on Christmas ad day, this definitely wasn’t one of them.
Unlike the original, it doesn’t feature a cover of Together In Electric Dreams, originally released by The Human League’s Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder in 1984.
It does, however, feature 100% more potato.
We’re not entirely sure what’s going on, but nothing says Merry Christmas like a load of frozen spuds, we guess.
A spokesperson for Iceland said about the clip: ‘We have an incredible range of Christmas foods this year but couldn’t miss this chance to show off one of our most popular exclusives.
‘For customers who are looking to change-up their Christmas dinner spread, and surprise a few guests, they could always serve up a few Space Raiders potato shapes along with some of our luxury, triple-cooked roast spuds.’
