Idina Menzel ‘felt really sorry’ for herself when John Travolta ‘f**ked up’ her name at the Oscars

Idina Menzel has recalled how ‘sorry for herself’ she felt at the 2014 Oscars when John Travolta said her name incorrectly on stage… although she has a far more positive outlook on the moment in hindsight.

Seven years ago at the 86th Academy Awards, Idina performed her powerful song Let It Go from Frozen, which was nominated and won Best Original Song that year.

In a moment that no one could have possibly foreseen, while introducing Idina, 50, on stage, John, 67, mispronounced her name, calling her ‘Adele Dazeem’.

In that instant, Idina was in a state of shock over the mishap, she recently said, as she had to pull herself together to deliver a rousing rendition of the ballad from the animated classic.

Fortunately, over time, Idina has realised just how positive an impact the Pulp Fiction star’s blunder has actually had on her life.

While taking part in Carpool Karaoke with her Cinderella co-stars Billy Porter and Camila Cabello on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Idina said that in the seconds after John ‘screwed up my name’, she ‘felt really sorry for myself’.

‘At first I felt really sorry for myself, like Meryl Streep’s out there, this is my big break and he just f**ked up my name,’ she said from the back of the car.

‘And then eight seconds, the band starts, and I’m like, “Get your s**t together, come on, this is your moment, like stop worrying about that he messed up your name. Sing bitch, you know.” But I was so nervous.’

Idina explained how she had originally intended to sing the song for her son, but then when her name was pronounced incorrectly, ‘it all went out the window’.

Nonetheless, now, she says that the error was ‘the greatest thing that ever happened’.

Pose star Billy said that when he was watching the 2014 ceremony from home, he knew that within 24 hours, Idina would become a ‘household name’ due to the unplanned moment.

‘We come from the same world and this was a huge crossover moment. We’re theatre babies,’ he said.

‘The thing that you think is going to be a big issue is the thing,’ he added, emphasising the enormity of the moment.

Idina outlined how John has tried over the years to make up for his mistake, writing ‘so many nice apologetic emails’ and sending her flowers.

‘He’s so kind, and to make up for it he would like fly wherever at this point, he’s so sweet. And I just always say, “No worries, cause it was the best thing that ever happened”,’ she said.

The Late Late Show with James Corden airs in the US on CBS.
