I’m A Celebrity’s 2020 series is now well underway, with campmates having survived their first week in camp.
We’ve seen Jordan North smash his way through Bushtucker trials, Ruthie Henshall opening up on what it was like getting drunk with the Royal family and Shane Richie reliving how he won his famous role as Alfie Moon on EastEnders.
Campmates have gone head-to-head in their first live trial of the series and Ant and Dec have been there overseeing everything, as the I’m A Celebrity camp ditched the Australian jungle for a haunted castle in Wales.
While that means that some things are definitely different in camp this year, like the celebs getting hot showers and forgoing their usual tans, other aspects haven’t changed – like the stars trying to communicate with their loved ones.
Every year, we see the celebs missing home and making secret signals when live on air to let their families know they’re thinking of them.
So who’s got secret signals this time round and what they are?
Coronation Street star Beverley, 63, who is best known for playing Liz McDonald on the soap, had come up with a secret sign to let her husband Jon McEwan know she was thinking of him.
They’d agreed before Bev entered camp that she’d twiddle her hair on camera, as a way of reaching out to her hubby, but he’s joked the star might have forgotten their secret pact already.
Appearing on Loose Women, Jon revealed: ‘Her sign is to twiddle her hair, but I think she’s forgotten it. She did it on the first episode and she hasn’t done it since. She’s dumping me for Jordan, I think I’m out.’
Vernon has been using the live shows to send messages to his daughters Phoebe, 16, and Amber, 11, while away from home. The presenter, who was also seen accidentally swearing live on air, has his kids names penned onto his hat – much like the other stars with children – and waved to them (not so subtly) on camera mid-way through the live trial.
His secret signal is for wife Tess Daly. Strictly Come Dancing host revealed that when Vernon wants to send a signal to her, he touches his ear.
Giovanna was the first celebrity to be rumbled for sending signals back home, as she was caught multiple times sticking her thumb to her nose and wiggling her fingers.
She’d done it sat around the campfire during the public vote reveal and was even seen making the gesture as she left her latest trial with the rest of the girls in camp, with Dec jokingly making it back to her.
Her husband, McFly star Tom Fletcher, confirmed on This Morning that it’s Giovanna’s way of saying hello to her three children; Buzz, six, Buddy, four, and Max, two. He said: ‘That was a little signal when she does that. That was a signal to the kids.’
Like Giovanna, Shane has been sending messages to his children to say that he loves them. His is a little more complex, with the soap star’s signal involving him getting one hand, placing two fingers underneath his nose, one on his nose, and two by his eye.
Shane’s wife Christie revealed the meaning behind the sign on Instagram at the start of the series. She shared a picture of Shane making the signal and wrote: ‘Shane’s special signal to the children, telling them he loves them. #love #daddy #husband #trials #hecanbequitefunnysometimes.’
The actor is dad to five children; Shane Jr, 31, and Jake, 28, who he shares with ex-wife Coleen Nolan and Mackenzie, 14, Lolita, 12, and Romani-Skye, nine, who he shares with current wife Christie Goddard.
Russell is keeping us guessing when it comes to his secret signs, but he does have them – his wife confirmed it. Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine, Russell’s wife Louise Harris, who he married in 2015, revealed: ‘He might have a couple of signs, yes.’
Louise, however, chose not to reveal what they were, meaning viewers will have to have a beady eye on Russell when the show is live on air.
Strictly Come Dancing star AJ Pritchard has been a little less subtle when it comes to checking in with his loved ones. He decided to completely forgo a secret signal and instead sneak in a quick shoutout to his dad on his birthday.
After completing his round in the live trial – where he was locked in stocks and his head in a box of rats – AJ made his way back to the boys to count out his coins and before doing so was heard saying: ‘Happy birthday dad at home. One… two…’
EastEnders star Jess doesn’t have a sign as such, as her daughter is too little to be tuning into the show. However, she did set up a kind of signal with her baby girl before heading into camp.
Jess came over all emotional during her first night in camp as she revealed to her co-stars: ‘I said to my daughter before we left each other, that if she misses me, when she’s at home, she looks for the moon, I can look at the moon and we can both see it.’
Her luxury item while in camp is a mug which has a picture of herself and her daughter Noa Lily, four, printed across the front.
I’m A Celebrity airs nightly on ITV at 9pm.
