Beverley Callard has cleared up any doubts that she’s not a vegan or that she only decided to go plant-based for her appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!.
The Coronation Street actress was eliminated from the ITV show alongside Victoria Derbyshire in scenes that aired tonight, and was immediately grilled by presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly over her diet.
‘There has been some chat about your veganism and some doubt to the validity of it,’ Dec probed as he proceeded to cite her on-screen son Simon Gregson’s suspicions.
‘Come clean now,’ Ant urged. ‘Is it just for the show?’
‘No,’ Beverley insisted. ‘I started it in March because I had an operation and I saw this documentary that said joints heal quicker if you’re plant-based.’
Hitting out at Simon for questioning her, Beverley continued: ‘He knows I’ll give him a slap when I see him.’
Earlier this month, Simon was asked on Loose Women if he believed Beverley’s veganism was to make sure she ‘doesn’t have to eat anything disgusting’ – and he couldn’t help but laugh.
‘Her daughter is vegan, and I’m sure Bev has done it for all the right reasons, you know, health and to save the planet,’ he told the panel. ‘If you believe that, I’m a mango.’
He then joked: ‘I’m pretty sure it’s because she doesn’t have to put a willy in her mouth.
‘I’ve known Bev when she’s come back from a pub late in the morning with kebab in her hair…’
Beverley also raised eyebrows over her veganism when she appeared to eat a scotch egg during her I’m A Celebrity stint.
However, her daughter shared that producers were providing Beverley with meat-free alternatives.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.
