I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2020 contestant Vernon Kay says his partner Tess Daly ‘encouraged’ him to sign up for this year’s series, stating that she is backing him ‘100 per cent’.
Last Sunday, the line-up for the upcoming series of I’m A Celebrity was officially confirmed, with stars including Olympian Sir Mo Farah, former Strictly star AJ Pritchard and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher set to participate in the competition at Gwrych Castle in Wales.
Among them is Vernon, 46, who has revealed his partner, Strictly Come Dancing co-presenter Tess, played an important role in him agreeing to take part.
The former All Star Family Fortunes presenter said his wife of 17 years is ‘100 per cent behind me’, adding that she ‘encouraged me to do it’.
‘She was like, ‘Just go in there and do it, have fun,’ he said.
Vernon revealed that he’s been asked to take part in I’m A Celeb on several occasions in the past, adding that his and Tess’ two daughters ‘always’ watch the show.
‘The deal was on the table last year and year before, but I had work commitments,’ he admitted.
‘I think 2020 has not been the best year, and that’s a massive understatement, and I just thought the timing was right, be it Wales or Australia, for me to give it a go.’
Vernon said that he’s looking forward to not being in charge of presenting the show, as all he has to do is ‘get in there and do what they tell you’.
‘It is easy, it is brilliant, because I don’t have to do anything,’ he remarked.
After rumours emerged that Vernon was going to appear on I’m A Celeb, he received a call from Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness wishing him luck, he said.
Vernon recalled Paddy telling him: ‘Go on sunshine, lots of love, I’m going to be voting every night and I’m going to spend every pound I have making sure you eat the sheep’s knackers.’
In the lead-up to the show, Vernon has been self-isolating at a farmhouse.
Before the line-up was officially announced, the TV presenter brushed off rumours that he would be taking part.
Amid the rumours, an Instagram user questioned whether he should be staying ‘in a castle’, to which Vernon mysteriously replied: ‘Don’t know what you mean…’
I’m A Celebrity starts on November 15 at 9pm on ITV.
