Music producer Naughty Boy has opened up about sharing his faith with his campmates as he heads into Gwrych Castle for this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, which kicks off on Sunday.
The 36-year-old is best known for working with singers including Beyonce and Sam Smith, with his and Sam’s song La La La winning best song and best video at the Mobo Awards in 2013.
Speaking with Metro.co.uk and other press before the start of the show, Naughty Boy – real name Shahid Khan – explained that his mum had told him to ‘start my day with a prayer’.
He added: ‘And it is something I want to get into because I am British Pakistani Muslim and I do want to shine my light there and share my light with people, and we can get to know each other’s faiths as well.
‘I’m looking forward to those conversations.’
The hitmaker was lined-up for last year’s competition but withdrew over concerns for his mother Zahida, 67, who has dementia and with whom he lives with as her carer, describing it as ‘a bit risky’ to have left her for that stretch of time last year when outside support was unavailable.
This year, things seem to have fallen into place much more smoothly, with the producer revealing that she’s ‘so excited’ for her son to appear on the show.
He shared: ‘She was very anxious about me leaving last year but this year it’s the flip reverse – she’s excited.
‘She said so many nice things and she was actually saying for me not to worry about her and just go off to the castle and come back home king of the castle.
‘And I said to her, ‘Let’s take it one step at a time, Mum!”
Naughty Boy, who is looking forward to the opportunity for people ‘to get to know the man’ behind all his music, which he describes as ‘the celebrity’ over himself, also revealed that he hoped he got to ‘keep some of the mystery’ as he credits that with how far he’s come.
He also described being ‘a people person’ as his greatest strength ahead of going into the castle and meeting his fellow celebrities for the first time.
‘I love talking to people, I love asking questions,’ he explained.
‘Sometimes, just the most honest questions.’
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! begins on Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
