I’m A Celebrity viewers got to see some new faces on the show last night, with Ruthie Henshall and Russell Watson arriving in camp for the very first time.

The pair arrived with a bang, taking part in a Bushtucker trial to win stars for their new campmates.

Elsewhere, Victoria Derbyshire tried her hand at stand-up comedy, Vernon Kay revealed his favourite celebrity encounter and AJ Pritchard and Jessica Plummer tried to win some tasty treats for camp.

But just what happened on last night’s show?

Victoria finds her funny

Victoria spoke to Shane Richie, asking for his advice on stand-up comedy after confessing that she was terrible at telling jokes.

Attempting to tell Shane a joke, Victoria said: ‘So I had to go to the doctors before I came to Wales. I said to the doctor, “doctor I feel like a supermarket” and he asked how long I’d felt like that and I said “ever since I was Lidl”.’

Shane said about her: ‘She’s so lovely, she’s got such a big heart.’

Encouraged by Shane, Victoria told the joke to the whole group. After a false start, where she failed to keep a straight face, she managed to deliver the punchline. The campmates all laughed and cheered for her.

Vernon shares his favourite celebrity encounter

After Shane shared his Tom Cruise story on Tuesday’s show, Vernon spoke about meeting his favourite celebrity Tom Hanks.

Speaking to Giovanna Fletcher, Vernon said he met the actor when he was promoting The Polar Express. Vernon was a T4 presenter at the time

Vernon said: ‘He was amazing. He was just the nicest fella. I interviewed him for The Polar Express but he was so nice and at the end I said I know this is really unprofessional, is there any chance you can sign this DVD cover of Forrest Gump for me. He signed it, “To Vernon, good luck with the new gig, Tom Hanks.”’

He also revealed that Tom remembered who he was a few years later while he was promoting The Da Vinci Code.

Vernon said: ‘I’ll never forget it, I I can see it now, Tom Hanks saw me and he just turned to Ron Howard [the film’s director] and he went “Oh this is Vern, he’s alright he is”. I’m like, he remembered my name. And he just turned around and said “Vern, oh he’s a good guy!”’

AJ and Jessica took on the Castle Coin challenge

AJ Pritchard and Jessica attempted to win a snack for camp on Wednesday, taking on the Lock Stock Barrel Castle Coin challenge.

They entered a room full of locked safes blocked by wooden boxes. They had to move them and create a path to access the safes and retrieve the coins.

After successfully completing the challenge, they visited Kiosk Cledwyn. They were given a choice of bread and butter or sweet popcorn and they chose the former as it would be the more filling option.

The camp answered the phone and successfully named the colours in the Welsh flag, winning the bread and butter. The campmates tucked into their treat and Beverley said: ‘That was the best bread I’ve ever tasted.’

The newcomers take on their first trial

All of the campmates joined Ant and Dec later in the show, believing they’d be taking part in Wednesday’s trial. They were relieved to learn that they wouldn’t be facing the trial at all, and that instead it would be newcomers Ruthie and Russell.

The trial took place over three rounds, with Ruthie and Russell each performing for the celebrities to win up to 12 stars.

The first part was called Laughing Stocks. Ruthie was covered in rotten tomatoes while locked in the stocks, and had to read the first part of a joke. Then, Russell found the joke’s punchline in a barrel of slime, maggots, rotten vegetables and fish guts using his mouth. They managed to win four out of the five stars for camp.

The next round called Eye Scream saw Ruthie and Russell use their mouths to transfer three fish eyes from a large bowl into an ice cream tub. They then had to crush a fish eye over the tub. They won both stars on offer.

Finally, the Critters in Ya Knickers round saw both celebs wear clear trousers over their clothes, which were slowly filled with crickets and cockroaches. They also wore headphones and had to dance to famous songs. They won a star every time the campmates guessed the song they were dancing to.

The campmates correctly guessed the Macarena, Single Ladies, Gangham Style, The Birdie Song and Proud Mary, meaning the camp won a grand total of 11 stars out of 12.

The new celebs join the camp for dinner

Some of the campmates admitted to being apprehensive about the incoming celebrities after the trial.

Vernon said: ‘I’ve got mixed emotions at the moment. [Their arrival] moves the dynamics about slightly. I would be genuinely upset if this dynamic changes.’

Shane also said: ‘We’re eating, sleeping, laughing, crying together and for another two people to come in you’re always frightened. It’s going to change the dynamics and we were kind of concerned about that.’

The campmates gave Ruthie and Russell a warm welcome, though.

‘As soon as Russell and I walked in, the welcome was just. it was wonderful, it was fantastic,’ Ruthie said.

Giovanna gave Ruthie her bed and Victoria generously offered Ruthie hers too.

‘We didn’t want to give you a hammock on the first night. They’re not easy,’ Jordan said.

Russell was grateful for the gesture, saying: ‘I honestly can’t believe how welcoming everyone was. It was really nice.’

Finally, dinner was revealed and the campmates got to work on the oxtail they’d been given.
