‘I’m determined to learn Russian for Stranger Things’: Meet the superfan going to extraordinary lengths especially for season 4

A Stranger Things superfan has given themselves the ambitious mission to learn Russian especially for season 4.

While little is known about the next chapter of the Netflix smash, we do know plenty of time will be spent with Jim Hopper (David Harbour), who is being held captive by The Soviets after somehow surviving the blast which closed the Upside Down, and spared Hawkins from obliteration.

A surprise teaser which dropped on Valentine’s Day 2020 revealed Hopper was not only alive but in Russia, confirming much of the next instalment will be set thousands of miles away from Hawkins as he presumably finds his way home.

While Netflix will no doubt provide subtitles for those of us not fluent in Russian, one fan is dedicating their time in lockdown to learning the notoriously difficult language especially for season four.

‘I think it would just be really cool to know another language,’ the fan, who goes by the name Ninja Kid on Reddit, told Metro.co.uk. ‘But before, whenever I would try to learn a language, I had no motivation for it and didn’t follow through, but Stranger Things is a great motivator for this.’

Ninja Kid got the idea after watching a scene from season three, when Murray Bauman (Brett Gaulman) yells at hesitant love birds Hopper and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) to just have sex on the side of the road, and ‘get it over with’.

‘Aleksei asks why he was yelling, and Murray replies that he told them to have sex, and they both burst into laughter,’ Ninja Kid chuckled. ‘I just thought it was so funny that Aleksei and Murray could say whatever and the other two wouldn’t understand it.’

Ninja Kid is using the language learning app Duolingo, but other Stranger Things fans who speak Russian suggested watching clips of dialogue on YouTube instead. Either way, they’re ‘hopeful’ by the time Starnger Things season four finally arrives, they’ll be able to keep up with Bauman and Aleksei’s Russian banter.

‘It will take quite a while to finish the next season due to COVID,’ they continued. ‘However, like I mentioned before, learning a language from a free app can get sketchy, so I’m not entirely sure.’

As it stands, there is no confirmed deadline for Ninja Kid to have the Russian dialect down. Stranger Things is still in production, after several months of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The likes of Millie Bobby Brown and Gaten Matarazzo have been snapped on set, while Lily Allen said only last month she’s missing her husband David Harbour while he films the trippy sci-fi series in Atlanta.

Thankfully, several cast members have promised the next cycle will be worth the wait, and producer Shawn Levy teased Stranger Things is returning ‘better than ever’.

‘I’ll just say the pandemic definitely massively delayed shooting and therefore the launch of our current Season 4, date still TBD,’ he told Collider.

‘But it impacted very positively by allowing the Duffer brothers, for the first time ever, to write the entire season before we shoot it and to have time to rewrite in a way that they rarely had before so the quality of these screenplays are exceptional, maybe better than ever.’

Stranger Things seasons one to three are available to stream on Netflix now.
