Mayim Bialik will be leading the way in her new comedy Call Me Kat, an American spin on the British sitcom Miranda.
As well as starring, the Big Bang Theory star will also be producing along with her former co-star Jim Parsons.
The cast and crew have been filming during the coronavirus pandemic, which has of course forced them to alter how the shoot will take place.
As Mayim has revealed in a behind-the-scenes look, everyone involved is doing their best to get episodes done while making sure work can continue as safely as possible.
Here is what we know about the series so far.
What is Call Me Kat about?
The series follows Kat (Bialik), a quirky woman who quits her teaching job to open a cat cafe, much to the despair of her mum (Swoosie Kurtz) who doesn’t believe her daughter can be happily single at 39.
Who is in the cast of Call Me Kat?
As well as Mayim, among the cast is American Horror Story star Cheyenne Jackson who is playing Kat’s love interest Max. Vanessa Lachey stars as Kat’s best mate Tara.
Leslie Jordan and Kyla Pratt play her cafe co-workers Phil and Randi.
When Mayim first announced her project with Jim, who played Amy’s husband Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, the series was going to called Carla.
In an Instagram post of the two of them, she said: ‘@therealjimparsons, and I are working together again!!!
‘He and I are joining to executive produce a show for me to star in based on the BBC show “Miranda.” It’s called “Carla” and it’s been an incredibly windy road to get here. SO worth it. We could not be more excited to work together and bring you this show which features SO MANY CATS!!!!’
When does Call Me Kat start?
It will kick off in January, in the middle of the 2020-2021 TV season on Fox.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus health crisis, everyone is wearing masks and there are no writers on set. Mayim was given hand sanitiser as a welcome gift when she got to her dressing room.
The live studio audience element has also been dropped.
Speaking on her YouTube channel, Mayim explained: ‘Typically we film with a live studio audience and because of Covid we cannot. So we’re filming like it’s a movie, which means we filmed all day. We have a handful of other producers from my company and Jim Parsons’ company who are tested and allowed to be on stage, but its very quiet and it’s very difficult.’
The star went on to share how it felt to shoot a comedy without anyone to react to the gags.
‘A lot of sitcom acting is dependent on timing based on laughs and what works for the audience,’ Mayim said.
‘So it’s definitely a new way of learning to do this kind of comedy.’
While the original series, starring Miranda Hart and Lucifer’s Tom Ellis, was a much loved hit, the American version will have some tweaks but the scripts are, according to the star, ‘really, really lovely’.
‘We’ve definitely Americanised it. We’re not as funny as you are over there but we’re doing our best though,’ she told Metro.co.uk.
Call Me Kat starts January 3 on FOX.
