Today marks the release of the last Grand Tour special, in which Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond reunite to travel across the Sahara.
The former Top Gear hosts first did a Grand Tour special in 2016, and their most recent one last year carried them throughout Central Europe in’strange vehicles nobody buys,’ with the three choosing a Chevrolet SSR, Mitsuoka Le-Seyde, and Crosley CC Convertible.
After nearly ten years, all three have recently commented regarding the future of the Amazon Prime Video series.
However, before it ends, they return for their ‘hottest challenge ever’, following in the footsteps of the famed Paris-Dakar rally.
Titled Sand Job the episode’s synopsis states: ‘In the remote African country of Mauritania, our trio follow in the footsteps of the legendary Paris-Dakar rally.
‘Instead of bespoke Dakar racers, the boys must complete their journey in cheap modified sports cars.
‘Their journey begins with the world’s longest train and sees them tackle the killer Sahara and perilous river crossings, whilst protecting their precious fuel bowser from exploding.’
It will enter theatres today, Friday, February 16.
While the show’s last full season aired in 2021, it was followed by two specials: A Scandi Flick in 2022 and Eurocrash last year.
The last special was taped in Zimbabwe and is expected to be published sometime next year.
When asked why he was done with the ‘immensely physical’ programme, Jeremy, 63, described himself as ‘unfit, obese, and elderly’.
‘I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else,’ he told The Times.
‘We’ve done everything you can do with a car.
‘When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air.’
Announcing another season of Clarkson’s Farm last year, Jeremy also posted on Instagram: ‘No more Grand Tour after next year but a LOT more Clarkson’s Farm.’
Earlier this year, James intimated on the Fuelling Around podcast that the series might be ending.
‘It’s not over but we’re probably nearer the end than the beginning. God, I hope so, we don’t want another 20 years of this.’
However, speaking to Radio Times, Richard said: ‘I’m sure it will be hard to leave it behind because it’s been 23 years growing into something we never thought it would. But it’d be a bit pre-emptive to host a wake for it now because it’s still breathing.’
Former Top Gear actors reunited on The Grand Tour after leaving the BBC series in 2016.
It had a similar concept to Top Gear, with emphasis on vehicle evaluations, challenges, races, and studio segments.
The Grand Tour: Sand Job is released today on Amazon Prime Video.
