Is Sherlock coming back? The latest on the BBC series

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most iconic characters ever created, becoming a favourite on both the page and on the screen.

From the consistently popular source material crafted by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to film adaptations, there have been many outings for the sleuth but seldom have been as popular as the BBC’s reimagining, Sherlock, which saw Benedict Cumberbatch step into the role.

The last episode to air of the series, called The Final Problem, aired on 15 January 2017. Wil it ever be back for more?

Like Sherlock, let us inspect the clues…

Will there be a season 5 of Sherlock?

The short answer is… no one knows.

The longer answer is it depends on a lot of factors, but the creative talents associated with the hit BBC series haven’t ruled out another series.

Co-creator Stephen Moffat told Radio Times in 2018 that the release date of the eventual season 5 is very much up in the air.

He said: ‘We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again. When, I don’t know. I think maybe the time for a longer gap is upon us, I don’t know.’

He did reveal at a Bafta screening in 2014 that they have plot details worked out for the potential fifth season.

He told the audience: ‘Rather excitingly, Mark (Gatiss) and I, for no particular reason, just started plotting out what we could do in the future. We plotted out the whole of series four and five. The ideas we had that day, I thought were the best we’ve ever had.’

Who could be in the cast for Sherlock season 5?

If a new season goes ahead, who might return?

In an interview with Collider, Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, had an abstract answer to whether there’d be more outings in the future.

He said of a possible return: ‘I’m the worst person to ask on this because I never say never, obviously. But I don’t know. And I’m the worst person to ask because my slate’s pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin [Freeman] and all the other key players involved. So, who knows?’

His slate being full with the likes of joining the all-dominant Marvel Cinematic Universe, of course.

In the MCU, Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange, having played the role throughout the Avengers films and most recently the new Spider-Man sequel, No Way Home.

Ending with a glimmer of hope for fans, he did add: ‘If the script’s right. And I say “the script,” maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now.’

Martin Freeman, who played Doctor Watson in the series, has been equally as busy as Benedict, starring in the likes of The Hobbit and joining his co-star in the MCU, having appeared in Black Panther.

If the show was to return, would Freeman be back as Watson?

He hasn’t addressed this himself but he has heaped praise on the series, including on Desert Island Discs where he said: ‘Probably nothing I’ve done… has resonated with certain parts of the world’s population the same way Sherlock has. It just hit a lot of buttons for people.’

Sherlock seasons 1-4 are available to stream on iPlayer.
