It’s A Sin favourite Callum Scott Howells has melted hearts as Colin in the Channel 4 drama, but before landing the standout role he made his bid for stardom with the help of Gary Barlow.
Before impressing Russell T Davies, Callum appeared on the BBC, auditioning for the Take That star’s short-lived talent show Let It Shine back in 2017.
Just 17 at the time, the sweet-natured Welshman charmed the judges – Gary, Amber Riley, Martin Kemp and Dannii Minogue – proudly declaring he was his school’s head boy.
However, he immediately put his foot in it when Glee star and Broadway actress Amber asked what that meant, as she was American.
Thinking she was asking about Wales, he responded: ‘There’s a country next to England, and that’s where I’m from.’
The studio audience and judges erupted into fits of laughter as he was corrected, with Callum blushing at his mistake.
Winning the judges over before he even sang a note, Callum then performed Hamilton track You’ll Be Back to get through to the next round – and succeeded.
Callum actually made it quite far in the competition, getting through to the final 40, where the contestants were split into five groups of eight for live shows with famous bands.
However, ahead of his group’s scheduled performance with Kaiser Chiefs on the show, Callum dropped out, having landed a West End role in a revival of musical She Loves Me at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory.
Now, he’s been winning rave reviews for his portrayal of Colin, a young gay Welsh tailor who comes into his sexuality as he heads to London to start his career.
The series, which focuses on the fallout of the Aids crisis on a group of friends, has left viewers in floods of tears, and has been praised as one of the most important LGBT dramas ever created.
It’s A Sin airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4, and is available in full on Channel 4 On Demand.
