It’s A Sin’s Nathaniel Curtis has shared how he had to stop filming an emotional scene in the fifth episode of the Channel 4 drama as it all got too much.
The actor, who plays Ash in Russell T Davies’ record-breaking series, explained the moment was the only time during the gut-wrenching show where he had to walk off set and get some much-needed fresh air. And, truly, can we blame him?
‘There was a moment when we were filming a scene in episode five where they’re at Christmas dinner and you see Ash cry for a split second in the episode,’ Nathaniel recalled in an exclusive chat with Metro.co.uk.
The scene, of course, took place moments after viewers discovered that Ritchie had died.
‘I was trying to tap into what Ash was going through at the time. That was the only time I had to take a second offset and stand outside just because it was a lot to deal with.’
He added that the cast and crew were wonderfully supportive and there were psychiatrists available to speak with just in case anyone needed to chat.
Nathaniel also revealed that he was a hot mess when he found out the devastating news that his on-screen partner Ritchie would eventually die from HIV/Aids in the last episode of the Channel 4 series.
‘I was on the train back to go and visit my family when I received episode 5 and I ugly sobbed the entire train journey,’ he recalled.
‘Don’t ever read a Russell T Davies script on public transport, ever. That is something I’ve learnt the hard way.
‘The script is one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. It moved me. I laughed, I cried and I learnt so much.’
It’s A Sin airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4 with the box set available to stream on All 4.
