It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia renewed for another 4 seasons

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is shattering its own record of longest-running live action comedy of all time, after being renewed for four more seasons.

The offbeat comedy earned the title back in May when FX renewed the show for season 15, breaking the record previously held by ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which ran for 14 seasons.

But now, the gang will be sticking around for at least 18 seasons, as confirmed by FX chairman John Landgraf as part of the Disney Investor Day presentation.

Creator and star Rob McElhenney wrote on Instagram: ‘Sunny was originally pitched as a 36 season arc. Happy to be halfway there.’

Glenn Howerton, who plays Dennis on the show, added: ‘Next up 4 more seasons of Sunny. Yeah you heard me. 4. Check the news, stupid.’

Kaitlin Olson, who plays Dee, joked: ‘If Sunny were a baby…..she’s legal. And HOT.’

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia began in 2005 and centred around an unethical, selfish and narcissistic group of friends – Dennis, Dee, Mac (McElhenney) and Charlie (Charlie Day) working in an Irish pub in Philadelphia.

In the second season, FX suggested a big name be added to the cast to boost dwindling viewing figures, resulting in Danny DeVito being cast as Frank, Dee and Dennis’s father.

It’s Always Sunny has become a cult success and has received critical acclaim, but has never received Emmy nominations for acting, writing or directing.

Season 15 of the show is scheduled to debut in 2021, and Howerton hinted that the Trump and Giuliani Four Seasons Total Landscaping debacle could creep its way into the plot, after fans noted that the notorious Philadelphia press conference looked like it took place down the road from Paddy’s Pub.

He told Den of Geek: ‘That has been discussed. Normally we would not do something like that because it’s something the audience has already thought of and it’s too obvious but man … that’s some good low-hanging fruit.

‘I don’t know. We’ll see. But it’s tempting, it’s very tempting.’

This four season renewal means that McElhenney will be even busier, seeing as he has a brand new career as a football club owner.

The 43-year-old is now co-owner of Wrexham AFC, after taking over the Welsh side with Ryan Reynolds last month.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is available to stream on Netflix.
