Ah, it’s that blissful time of year – May 12 – when fans of The Simpsons freak out by discovering just how old Homer Simpson is.

The titular character on the long-running Fox series celebrated another spin around the sun today and while the character has not aged in the 30+ years the show has been running, he’s still got an age that is very much changing to us in the real world.

If you’ll recall the season four episode, Duffless, which shared with us a glimpse of the lead character’s driver’s license, we’ve been celebrating Homer’s ‘real’ age each year.

And on it, it confirmed Homer was born May 12, 1956, making him 65 years old today.

Yes, Homer Simpson is 65. This shouldn’t be such a shock as we go on this rollercoaster of emotions every 365 days, but here we are again, as punters celebrated Homer’s day.

The character has aged one year in the past three decades, with the official Simpsons Twitter page tweeting: ‘If Homer had a dollar for every year he’s aged, he’d have a dollar!

‘Happy Birthday, big guy.’

Fans also pointed out that in recent episodes, producers messed with the canon of the show and portrayed Homer as growing up as a teen in the 90s (he’s 39 on the programme, so this makes sense, in theory).

In a reply, one very accurately mused: ‘It’s all very confusing.’

Another quipped: ‘He looks good for his age. It’s like he hasn’t aged in over 30 years!!!’

Funny that.

One fan was celebrating the fact Homer was now of retirement age, so sayonara to the nuclear power plant!

‘It’s Homer Simpson’s 65th birthday today which means he made it to retirement finally!!’ they mused on Twitter. ‘I know that’s a laughable concept to my generation but I like living through fictional characters’ milestones.’

And one was simply needing a moment, as they wrote: ‘Whoa, Homer Simpson is 65?’

Last year Homer’s birthday trended after fans discoverehis real age and weren’t too sure how to process such information.

Ever since its debut in 1989, Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart and especially Maggie haven’t aged at all, yet the world around them has.

Want to know how old the rest of the main cast is?

Marge was one of Homer’s classmates, making her the same age, while Bart is approaching 40, Lisa is two years behind him and baby Maggie would be around 30-31, going by the show’s premiere.

Don’t forget, though, it’s also Santa’s Little Helper’s birthday today. And when you wish the dog a happy birthday, you’ve got to pat him hard – so he can feel it.
