‘It’s the worst we have seen’: Dr Alex George gets candid as NHS staff are left traumatised by pressures of Covid wave

Dr Alex George has opened up about the harsh reality of working on the frontline after it was revealed that hospitals are seeing a huge surge in coronavirus cases.

The former Love Island star appeared via video link on Wednesday’s Lorraine where he explained to the host that ‘it’s the worst we have seen’.

‘We ask such a lot of you, especially now. I feel almost as if this is the worst it’s been,’ Lorraine Kelly began.

‘I know there is a lot more information and a lot more you can do, but you’re all on your knees.

‘It’s really hard right now. We know there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s tough isn’t it?’

‘I try to be as honest as I can Lorraine and it’s the worst we have seen,’ Dr Alex replied. ‘It is really tough at the moment.’

Speaking about what it was like working on his last shift, the TV doctor continued: ‘We were under immense pressure to be honest.

‘Of course, hospitals around the country have declared major incidents, which essentially means that they’re at a point where they may no longer be able to provide service or the service as usual.

‘Ultimately what that means for doctors and nurses and as healthcare professionals, are we still going to be able to give the level of care that we want to give our patients? And that is scary.’

Dr Alex also spoke to Lorraine about the effects the surge in Covid cases are having on the hospital staff.

He added: ‘I’m not shocked, I am saddened but not surprised.

‘The mental health of staff, the pressure is immense we need to look after our staff and it’s not easy at the moment.’

Since the beginning of the year, NHS England figures showed that admissions to hospitals up and down the country were hitting an all-time high daily.

The figures come as the NHS creaks under the strain of a surge in new Covid-19 infections, with many fearing the health service is near breaking point.

Last week, NHS England chief executive Sir Simon Stevens confirmed that there were 50% more coronavirus inpatients in England’s hospitals now than there were during the first wave in April, affecting every region across the country.

It comes after Dr Alex revealed to his Instagram followers that he had received the Covid-19 vaccine.

Last week the GP shared his relief over finally feeling like there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’, now the vaccine is being rolled out across the country.

The former reality star shared a picture of himself after having the injection, where he was seen giving a thumbs up while wearing his hospital scrubs and a face mask.

He wrote alongside his snap: ‘I HAVE HAD THE VACCINE!! We have all been hoping for a vaccine ever since this virus appeared. Felt quite emotional having the jab, it has been a hard year!’

‘I am so glad there is light at the end of the tunnel. Huge thanks to Chris, one of the hospital pharmacists, for giving me the injection and to everyone working so hard to roll this out,’ Alex continued. ‘It was a quick jab then back to work for me!’

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
