James Whale ‘on standby’ to take Piers Morgan’s GMB seat: ‘I’d be ideal’

James Whale has said he’s ‘waiting’ for the call up to replace Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, believing he’s an ‘ideal’ replacement.

Piers sensationally quit the ITV flagship programme in March after refusing to apologise for comments he made on Meghan Markle, leaving a gaping hole in the breakfast line-up he leads alongside Susanna Reid.

Since his exit, GMB regulars Adil Ray, Ranvir Singh and Ben Shephard have stepped in to co-helm the desk, while last week former political advisor Alastair Campbell took the reins.

But TV presenter James believes he’s the best choice to take the desk next, saying he’s ‘on standby to make Susanna’s morning’.

Writing for Express this week, James said: ‘After the fiasco of the Piers Morgan walk out on Good Morning Britain, the programme makers are obviously not really sure what they’re doing, apart from floating around in a pit of wokeness.

‘They invited Alastair Campbell to be a guest presenter and then started telling him what he couldn’t say. He was given a list of words banned by regulator Ofcom before he’d opened his mouth. I’ve been expecting the call from GMB for a while now. But blow me, it hasn’t come.’

He added: ‘I’d be ideal for a couple of weeks or so. If I could help them get a little credibility back, I’d be more than happy to oblige. And I think me sitting next to Susanna Reid would really make her day. Let’s cut out the agents and give me a start date.’

Neither Piers nor Susanna have commented on James’s gesture, but he’s got some stiff competition.

This week Richard Madeley – who many have tipped to take Piers’s spot – said he wouldn’t kick the opportunity out of bed.

The former This Morning host is joining the ITV show for the month of June as the latest star to host alongside Susanna, telling The Sun he thinks he would ‘suit’ the role but is unsure if he will take over permanently.

‘It’s a good show to do. It suits me and, yeah, I think I suit it. Whether I’m going to be asked to take over, I have no idea. I have had no approach at any level formally or informally. The phone hasn’t rung, I haven’t had a ping into my inbox,’ he told the publication.

Richard went on: ‘The bookies have me down as the front-runner and there have been opinion polls where I’ve come out reasonably well, but there’s a huge difference between that and it being a reality.

‘I’ll go in, I’ll fill in, I’ll enjoy it and I hope they ask me back. But in terms of sitting in for Piers, it’s a completely open question.’

Speaking about his potential new job to  last month, he added: ‘If the phone went and they said, “Would you come in and talk?” of course I would talk to them.

‘It would be bonkers not to. But I very much like sitting in for people. I have all the fun and very little of the responsibility or flak.’
