Jason Bateman has responded to a popular fan theory that his similarly dead-pan characters in Ozark and Arrested Development are actually the same person.

The first seven episodes of Ozark’s final season launched on Netflix last week, with a cliff-hanger leaving fans shocked to the core as they await the next batch of episodes.

In it, Jason plays Marty Byrde, a financial advisor and family man that unwillingly gets caught up in money laundering for the cartel.

But before that, Jason amassed millions of fans as Michael Bluth, the centre of a spoilt family whose patriarch figure loses everything after being convicted of fraud.

There are glaring similarities between the two personalities, prompting a wild theory Marty is actually Michael but part of a witness protection scheme.

Even Jason conceded the pair had ‘similar blind spots’.

‘I’m not too far removed from a drama when I’m doing Arrested Development and I’m not too far from a comedy when I’m doing Ozark,’ he told the Guardian, addressing the similarities.

‘In a drama, I’m not the person with a knife, I’m the person getting chased. In a comedy, I’m not the person farting, I’m the person who smelled it.’

Ozark will bow out with its final episodes later this year, with the first half of season four closing with two huge deaths as Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) and Ruth’s (Juila Garner) cousin Wyatt Langmore (Charlie Tahan) were shot dead by Javi Elizonndro (Alfonso Herrera) soon after tying the knot.

After finding their bodies, Ruth sped off in a rampage promising an all out war ahead.

Ozark is available to stream on Netflix now.
