Joe Lycett feared he had overstepped the mark with his recent on air stunt as he gave fans a behind the scenes look at his successful attempt to get drink brand Yop! to stop using white PET plastic for its packaging.
The comedian outlined its the plastic’s impact on the environment as it is much harder to recycle.
In July he pretended to storm off live on air during Steph’s Packed Lunch to draw attention to the issue, and was ultimately successful as Yop! committed to changing their bottles to clear PET plastic in 2022, and will also include recycled plastic in its packaging.
On his show Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back on Thursday night he gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at his plan, revealing host Steph McGovern was in on it the whole time – although her guests Denise Van Outen and Simon Rimmer were left properly baffled.
After telling the presenter about his campaign, Steph then pointed out in an Instagram picture from the comedian that he had a Yop! bottle next to him, which he had said he wanted to stop using.
Before the ad break Joe was seen removing his microphone and leaving the set, refusing to return.

He looked pleased with how well it had gone as his name began to trend on Twitter. But when concerned family members reached out he began to get cold feet.
Joe confessed: ‘I had friends and family get in touch, and it was actually quite scary. I thought, “Did I take things too far?”‘
However he was thrilled that it all paid off and to celebrate, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Tia Kofi serenaded the crowd with a Yop! Megamix that saw her change the wording of classic songs to include the word ‘yop’. Brilliant.
In a more serious message at the end of the episode, Joe said people can make a difference by putting ‘pressure’ on companies to be more mindful of the materials they use.
Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back airs Thursdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
