Joey Essex rescued from drowning by emergency divers in terrifying I’m A Celebrity Australia challenge

Joey Essex had a close call after taking on a dangerous trial for I’m A Celebrity Australia.

The former TOWIE star, 31, required emergency assistance before things took a turn for the worst.

Joey’s challenge was to swim through freezing water covered with plexiglass.

There were air holes placed strategically in each section, which Joey had to locate.

The reality star then had to pop his head out and retrieve stars from a block of ice which, in true I’m A Celeb style, contained critters and crawlies.

After completing the trial, Joey had 20 seconds to swim back to the starting point and ring a bell before climbing out to meet hosts Chris Brown and Julia Morris.

However, while things were going swimmingly up until that point, Joey began to panic on his way back when he couldn’t come up for breath.

The Celebs Go Dating star became disorientated as he searched for the air hole, which made the presenters call in an emergency diver.

Watching Joey frantically swimming beneath the surface, looking for the hole, Julia said: ‘Oh my God. I’m gonna panic. Can we get the diver?’

A scuba diver suddenly appeared in the water and guided Joey towards the air hole so he could catch a breath.

Soon enough, he was back in the tank and rushing towards the finish line, ringing the bell and completing the task with just seconds to spare.

Upon climbing the ladder out of the water following his terrifying ordeal, Joey shared: ‘That was intense. I couldn’t find the hole. The goggles got the water in them. And it’s hard. You couldn’t, it was hard to find the holes.’

He was clearly shaken up, admitting he felt like he was getting hypothermia in the freezing water.

‘There was a few times that I was panicking hard underwater. I couldn’t breathe,’ he told the worried hosts.

Joey joined the I’m A Celeb camp earlier this week, but Aussie viewers were left bewildered by his identity.

Some even had to Google his name, with even major fans of reality TV not having a scooby who he is.

But, it seems like the Essex lad is making friends on the show and he’s already providing us with memorable moments.

After finishing fourth in the 13th series of the British version of I’m A Celeb, it’ll be interesting to see where Joey finishes up down under.
