John Barrowman ordered by friend to ‘hide behind a tree’ in case of ‘a second attack’ after Berlin crash

John Barrowman and his husband Scott Gill have recalled being told to ‘hide’ in case of a second attack after one person was killed when a car ploughed into a crowd of people in Berlin on Wednesday morning.

As well as one fatality, around 30 others have been injured after the incident, in a popular shopping district in Berlin, where the couple were visiting.

Berlin police spokesman Martin Dams said the incident happened near the popular Kurfuerstendamm shopping boulevard in the west of the German capital, while Berlin police said on Twitter: ‘A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.’

Barrowman was caught up in the commotion as he and Gill spent time in the area, but it took them a little while to work out exactly what was happening.

The Doctor Who actor has already shared some from the scene earlier today, telling fans on social media he had witnessed what he feared might be ‘terrorist attack’ and later gave a tearful interview on Sky News alongside his partner.

Later this afternoon, he opened up further on the attack while chatting to Colin Brazier on GB News, with his husband by his side.

Gill explained how they’d become aware of the ‘loud noise’ while they were shopping on the other side of the road, and said: ‘We got the sensation of a bit of commotion but it wasn’t until we got outside we saw ambulances and police trying to arrive.

‘It built very gradually, at first, we thought it was a minor car accident. We began to realise there were far more incidents further up the streets, it was a much bigger scene than we imagined.’

They both described the debris they could see up the street, as Barrowman recalled being at the ‘centre’ of the incident.

He told the host: ‘When the second wave of first responders came in and cordoned off the area, we were in the centre of it.

‘That was when I got a phone call from a friend, who was an ex-military helicopter pilot who was in Afghanistan and he was just calling to say hello and I told him what had happened.’

The former Dancing On Ice judge was immediately told by his friend to ‘get behind a tree’ or ‘something that could protect you.’

‘Because if there is a second wave of something, if it is an attack, they are distracting with one and they might do another.

‘So that’s why when I was doing some of the videos I was down by a tree and hidden a large cement thing,’ he told Brazier.

He shared with followers that he was witnessing the aftermath of the harrowing crash in the Germany capital in a clip uploaded to Twitter from the scene.

‘It’s really pretty bad guys. Over where we are here, there’s a lot of police, a dead body in the middle of the road.’

In another clip, John explained he’d been moved ‘all the way down from the incident’, with helicopters coming in to assist the injured.

He said: ‘This is bad… there are hundreds of emergency services in the area. They’re blocking off city block after city block off and keeps expanding. We’re being pushed back and out.’

The pair returned back to their hotel shortly after, to make sure they were out of the way of the scene.
