John Whaite’s partner dismisses Strictly Come Dancing ‘curse’

Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite made headlines as the first contestant on the show to be put in a same-sex pairing with pro dancer Johannes Radebe.

But that is of no concern to John’s real-life partner who doesn’t fear the effects of the Strictly curse on the former Great British Bake Off star.

Making one of his regular appearances on Steph’s Packed Lunch today as the show’s resident chef, John brought along his partner of 13 years Paul Atkins.

Steph McGovern asked whether they’re bothered about the so-called ‘Strictly curse’ which sees contestants straying from their partners as they enter the competition and spend a lot of time rehearsing in close quarters with incredibly attractive and fit dancers.

John quickly deferred the question to Paul who said: ‘If you could see him at the end of the day after a full day’s rehearsing, he can barely walk so there’s no room for anything else.’

‘He crawls through the door at the end of the day,’ he added.

John also revealed what he and Johannes have in store for Saturday’s week three dance.

It’s movie week under the glitter ball and the duo will perform a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed paso doble.

‘I love it, I think it might be my favourite dance yet,’ he said, calling the performance ‘very orchestral, very powerful’.

As for the costumes, ‘I’ve asked for thigh-high boots but they’re going to give me knee-high boots because I’ve got to bend,’ he continued.

‘I’m going to be a pirate. I’m going to get custom-made boots, hopefully a bandana, earrings…’

Meanwhile, Steph’s other guest, who was none other than Strictly judge Anton Du Beke, was struggling to keep a straight face and not reveal any of his opinions about John’s performance ahead of time.

But hearing John’s description of his costume, he couldn’t hold it in anymore and he erupted saying: ‘Custom-made boots and a codpiece!’

John however took the joke well saying: ‘Do you know, that’s what’s in my bottom drawer.’

‘Hopefully, it’s going to be a very masculine affair,’ he continued. ‘I have asked for a sequin parrot but I don’t think I’ll get that.’

John joined Steph for a chat with fellow Strictly star Rhys Stephenson, who revealed: ‘Both times now when we’ve hit the top of the leader board, John’s been the one that’s knocked us off. Last Saturday he did by one point!’

John jokingly jibed: ‘You’ll have to bring you’re A-game, guys!’

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12.30pm on Channel 4.
