A trailer from Kate Garraway’s latest documentary has been released, as she explores the aftermath of Derek Draper’s return from hospital after being an in-patient for over a year.
Derek spent 374 days in hospital after contracting Covid in March 2020 and has lived with one of the worst cases of the virus in the country.
He was placed in a medically-induced coma, and the true impact of the illness was realised when he gradually woke up, with major organs such as his heart and lungs affected.
Last year, he finally returned home to his family with Kate and two children Darcey, 15, and William, 12 and now receives 24-hour care.
But the upcoming documentary will share Kate’s journey as she adjusts to life caring for Derek amid his slow recovery from the virus, which acts as a follow up to her programme last year.
In a trailer for the special episode, fans can see the family celebrate Derek’s first birthday since returning home, as well as his gradual steps to rehabilitation.
Kate told viewers: ’I’m very protective of people seeing him vulnerable but this is the reality of life for people that are caring.
‘The person he is now, in many ways, is a stranger.’
In a snippet with co-star Ben Shephard, the presenter told his friend: ’He is desperately clinging on to the idea that things can get better.’
‘If we have a love and he can be a dad to the children in a whole new way, that’s life isn’t it.’
Ranvir told viewers they would give them a first look at the episode, telling them of Kate: ‘She is amazing, isn’t she.’
Richard added: ‘For us, outside that situation, it’s so good to see definite progress compared to the way things were this time last year.’
He called it ‘uplifting to see’ before noting: ‘A long, long way to go but things are moving in the right direction.’
It comes after Kate shared she has found ‘a new way to be in love’ with her husband as he continues his recovery.
Speaking to the Daily Mail’s You Magazine, she said: ‘I’m not sure that we’ve ever fallen out of love, but I think a new path is emerging, a new way to be in love.
‘He puts huge trust in me. He just says, “Whatever you think”, which is wonderful, but I do get quite tearful about it. I think, “God, I hope I’m worthy of that trust”.’
She added: ‘But I’ve got his back. That is a relationship in itself, isn’t it? How many times do couples have doubts about each other?’
Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek airs Tuesday, February 22 on ITV.
