Kate Garraway awkwardly asks Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu to say her own surname after stumble and it doesn’t go down well

Kate Garraway has sparked shock among Good Morning Britain viewers when she asked Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu to say her own surname after messing up on the pronunciation in an awkward exchange.

On Friday’s edition of the ITV programme, Kate and Ben Shephard interviewed Dr Shola and Leo Kearse about cancel culture when the incident occurred.

After Ben introduced the pair, speaking to Leo first about his experience of being ‘cancelled’ as a comedian, Kate then turned to Dr Shola, attempting to say her full name but blundering on the lawyer and activist’s surname, stating: ‘Let me do that again.’

However, she then appeared to give up completely, saying: ‘Dr Shola – you say your surname, ‘cause I’m useless this morning.’

Dr Shola replied: ‘Ok so read it phonetically. I’m not going to let you get away with that. Read it phonetically, pronounce it as you see it.’

Kate read her guest’s surname again, as Dr Shola clapped in response to the GMB presenter finally saying her name correctly.

The GMB co-host insisted that she also stumbles over the name ‘Smith’, adding: ‘So you know, it’s nothing to do with anything else. I just struggle to get my words out most mornings.’

However, several viewers expressed their fury over her inability to say Dr Shola’s surname straight away, with one questioning whether she practised beforehand.

‘For a presenter who must get paid a few hundred thousand a year, you would think Kate would have the professional courtesy to practice the surname of a guest beforehand, if she knew she would struggle with it. Rather than “I can’t be a**ed, introduce yourself Shola! #GMB,”’ one person tweeted.

In a second tweet, they added: ‘At worst it’s casual racism which probably didn’t even register with her, at best it’s completely unprofessional, rude and lazy.’

Another viewer praised Dr Shola for ‘standing her ground’, with someone else expressing in astonishment: ‘Jheez as if that just happened!’

The interview with Dr Shola and Leo became extremely heated when Leo brought up a previous quote Boris Johnson made several years ago when the politician compared Muslim women who wear burkas to letterboxes.

‘That’s not an expression of hate, it’s just a visual gag because they look a bit like letterboxes. It’s not a hateful thing. The only hate I can see is from the people doing the cancelling,’ he said.

Dr Shola was horrified by Leo’s remarks, replying: ‘This is unacceptable. This is utterly unacceptable.’

The activist continued: ‘Your words are utterly reprehensible, that you have the audacity to come on national TV and reinforce the ugly words said by Laurence Fox, the ugly words said by Boris Johnson, acting like the lives of those Muslim women are less important than a privileged man who was given the keys to the kingdom.’

After Leo and Dr Shola tried to speak over each other, Ben informed the pair that they were out of time for their joint interview.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
