Kate Garraway emotional as Derek Draper is seen mouthing the word ‘pain’ in hospital

Kate Garraway had an emotional moment as footage of husband Derek Draper mouthing the word ‘pain’ aired for the first time.

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star will detail her ordeal supporting Derek throughout his recovery in hospital from coronavirus in the documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek.

In a teaser clip shown on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, Kate is seen on Facetime with Derek as a doctor does a physiotherapy session with him. As the doctor lifts his arm, Derek mouths ‘pain’ and looks visibly uncomfortable.

Speaking to Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard in the GMB studio, Kate was clearly overwhelmed with emotion and breathed a huge sigh.

Kate explained that it was the first time she had seen Derek mouth a word since being admitted into hospital last March.

The presenter said of his progress: ‘Maybe conversations are stretching it… maybe it’s more words and being able to interpret them and that has regressed a little.

‘This year has not been so good… but there were [moments of progress] and that gives you hope and there are moments in the documentary where I think people that know Derek will know that he’s there.

‘For such a long time that’s been the horror, is he still in there? Is he trapped inside or is he gone?’

She then joked: ‘He’s even got his accent back. Even Covid can’t take Chorley out of a man so that is just miraculous actually.’

Kate, 53, had earlier said she was ‘aware of how lucky’ Derek, also 53, is because he’s still alive and therefore ‘still has the chance to battle on’.

The TV star added: ‘After about six months we were able to get an iPad into hospital so I could talk to him in coma.

‘It was so emotional for me to talk to him it was all I could do to not focus on falling apart.

‘There’s obviously hours and hours of nothingness of blank staring, which we felt was too personal [to show]. But the moments you see are where he’s clearly [coming round].

‘Derek has dedicated his life to mental health since leaving politics because he’s a psychotherapist and psychologist.

‘I think he would like his journey to be told. I think he would like to tell it himself, hopefully soon but not yet.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
