Kate Garraway finally got the chance to meet some of the nurses who saved her husband Derek Draper’s life when he was first admitted to hospital with coronavirus earlier this year.
The 53-year-old presenter became emotional when she met the ICU Staff from the Whittington Hospital in North London on Thursday morning as they appeared on Good Morning Britain via video link.
It was the first time Kate saw the faces of the nurses who fought to save Derek’s life as he battled a severe case of Covid-19 in March.
‘It’s so great to talk to you, because I didn’t realise that you actually cared for Derek, my husband, when he was at the Whittington when he first got sick,’ Kate told them.
She continued: ‘And, you know, his life was saved by all of you. I’m going to get emotional now. I’ve never spoken to you because of course we weren’t allowed to visit. It was very chaotic in that time and very pressurised.
‘You weren’t chaotic, it was a chaotic time. And often I was getting information from direct care. So thank you, first of all, it means so much, and for all you’re doing for so many people.’
One of the nurses told the presenter: ‘You’re welcome Kate, I’d just like to say on behalf of all of Whittington Intensive Care staff we did our very best to look after all patients including Derek.
‘All of us here looked after Derek – I was here the day he was admitted – and we’d just like to wish all of you the very, very best from all the staff from the intensive care unit here.’
Kate replied: ‘Look at you, you are saviours of Derek and so many people.’
Earlier in the episode, Kate revealed she was facing new ‘challenges’ with Derek, 53, as Christmas fast approaches.
The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star is struggling to decide whether to isolate with her children Darcey and Billy so they can see Derek in hospital on Christmas Day, or to have a small number of relatives over to her house instead.
Kate also shared that she took two weeks off from work following a coronavirus scare as her children came into contact with a person who later tested positive for the virus.
Derek is believed to be the UK’s longest case of coronavirus after remaining in hospital for nine months now, however he has been free of Covid-19 for some time. The former lobbyist was previously in a coma but has now progressed to a minimal state of consciousness.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
