Kate Garraway has revealed that she’s planning on creating a follow-up documentary to Finding Derek, a film about her husband’s Covid-19 diagnosis and subsequent health struggles.

Earlier this week, Kate, 54, made an appearance at the National Television Awards, where her ITV film about her husband Derek Draper, 54, won the best authored documentary award.

The Good Morning Britain presenter teared up as she accepted the accolade, emphasising in her speech that those who have been through similar situations to her and her family during the pandemic are ‘not forgotten’.

Kate has since revealed that there are plans to make a second documentary, which would likely follow him after his return home from hospital after a year.

Speaking at the NTAs, Kate told The Sun: ‘We are going to make another documentary – there are plans for more.

‘Derek has a very short window of energy, but we are trying. He has been home for four months now and it was enough for him being home.’The broadcaster added: ‘Now we are really hoping we can have more and more people in to see him.’

Kate and Derek share two children, a daughter called Darcey, 15, and a son called Billy, 12.

In April, former lobbyist Derek was able to return home after his prolonged hospital stay, having experienced damage to areas of his body including his kidneys, liver and pancreas after contracting coronavirus.

Derek, who is known as one of the worst affected Covid-19 patients to survive, also suffered holes in his heart after his heart stopped multiple times, bacterial pneumonia and infections which left holes in his lungs.

During her speech at the NTAs, Kate said that it was a ‘hugely brave decision’ for ITV to commission the documentary on Derek as ‘they didn’t know what they were making’.

‘[Director] Lucy arrived not knowing if she was seeing a family in grief or relief, in the end it ended up being something between the two,’ she said.

‘Thank you so much for voting. I’m wondering if that was because our story is also your story.

‘We’ve all been touched by the pandemic, all the other docs that have been highlighted and nominated tonight they’ve also been affected by the pandemic.’
