Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek Draper is ‘phenomenally fatigued’ and ‘very weak’ following family panto trip

Kate Garraway MBE has revealed that her husband Derek Draper is ‘phenomenally fatigued’ as she joined Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.

The TV presenter, 54, appeared on the ITV show as a guest after being recognised for her services to broadcasting, journalism, and charity in the New Year Honours list.

Speaking to Susanna Reid and Richard Bacon on the programme, Kate gave an update on Derek, who is one of the worst-affected patients to have survived Covid.

‘He’s doing alright,’ Kate told them. ‘He is phenomenally fatigued at the moment. He’s very fatigued and very weak.’

At the end of December, Derek was pictured smiling on a rare family outing to the panto after his battle with coronavirus.

Kate added that following the trip, he was not able to get out of bed.

‘We thought it was worth it and I know he did too,’ she continued. ‘It took everything out of him. We don’t know what this year is going to bring.’

In September 2021, Kate won the authored documentary prize at the National Television Awards for her hard-hitting documentary Finding Derek.

The programme charted her family’s struggle to get her husband home from hospital after he became seriously ill with Covid in March 2020.

Though Derek, a former political adviser, is now free of the virus, he has sustained long-lasting damage to his organs and his recovery is ongoing.

A sequel, titled Caring For Derek, will show the period following Derek’s return home as Garraway navigates the challenges of the social care system. It is set to air in 2022.

Kate previously told Good Morning Britain on December 24, that there was still a ‘long, long way to go’ in his recovery, but added she felt grateful to have him home this festive period.

‘Obviously, he still has extraordinary problems with communication, mobility is very limited, massive problems with fatigue,’ she told the show.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
