Kate Garraway has opened up about the extreme fatigue her husband Derek Draper has been battling since he came home from hospital.
The former political advisor was in hospital for over a year after contracting Covid-19, which ravaged his body damaging his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.
He is now home but still in need of care and continues to be ‘devastated’ by the effects of the virus.
Derek is suffering from serious fatigue and spends the majority of every day sleeping, Kate shared.
Speaking on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain, she warned people that Covid-19, and long Covid, are ‘not the flu’ and detailed what her husband deals with.
The presenter said: ‘We’re in a situation where most people are likely to catch Covid because we can’t stop people catching it. It’s the vaccinations that stop it being more damaging.
people who have had it mildly are arguing it’s the same as flu, and flu can be devastating to people, but this different because flu doesn’t give you this degree of organ damage. Even when you look at some of the symptoms that some of the people who have been double vaccinated suffer from, it’s fatigue.
‘I used to think it was being exhausted by getting up in the morning. The fatigue Derek has, I know he’s an extreme case, but Derek is sleeping 20 out of 24 hours a day. He has 10 minute windows. It’s not just feeling a bit tired, He goes white, pale, and it’s like everything shuts down.
‘You don’t want that kind of fatigue, even ruling out all the other things that people are suffering with with long Covid.
Noting the benefits of the vaccine she added: ‘The idea that you can prevent that and just have a bad week in bed, is life-changing, isn’t it?’
The I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! star has transformed her London home to cater to Derek’s new complex needs, including turning the downstairs office into a bedroom for the former political lobbyist and renovating the bathroom into a wet room.
She recently managed to take a short break away with their two children Billy and Darcey, with Susanna Reid cutting her own holiday short to return to Good Morning Britain to allow Kate to spend more time with her family.
Kate, who has released a book and a documentary about her family’s ordeal, told her co-star: ‘Thank you to you and the friends that helped me, and to Derek’s family who stepped into the breach to make sure he had a nice break from me!’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
