Kate Garraway has spoken about the new Coca-Cola Christmas advert, saying that she found it a ‘tough watch’ as her husband Derek Draper remains in hospital.

The presenter spoke on Good Morning Britain today about the new festive clip, which shows a young girl asking Santa to ‘bring daddy home for Christmas’.

Kate’s husband Derek has been in hospital since contracting coronavirus in March. It was claimed last month that he was the UK’s longest-suffering Covid-19 patient in hospital.

The presenter said the new advert is ‘causing a lot of upset’, after showing a father making the journey to see Santa on the North Pole to give him his daughter’s Christmas list.

Speaking to Ben Shephard on the ITV show, Kate said: ‘It is tough I think for all the advertisers at the moment, because it is their job to pull on our heart strings.

‘It is their job to get people to spend, but they are also causing a lot of upset from people as well.’

Kate added: ‘I know [co-host Ben] feels very uncomfortable about this because of my personal circumstances, but the Coca Cola advert ends with a request that all they want from Father Christmas is daddy home.’

The presenter’s family haven’t been able to see Derek since he was first hospitalised. The presenter recently shared an update about Derek’s condition, saying that he had mouthed the word ‘pain’ to doctors.

The new advert, which is directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi, was revealed earlier this week.

While the presenter felt it was a ‘huge breakthrough’ for her family, it was bittersweet as it meant her husband was in pain.

Kate added: ‘Obviously tough for me, tough for other people that have reacted as well.

‘It’s a strange situation with so much loss, so much fear, so much separation.’

Meanwhile, viewers recently offered to lend Kate their cars after hers got stolen earlier this month.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
