Katy Perry overcome with awkwardness after American Idol contestant links her to ex John Mayer

Katy Perry almost died from cringing after an American Idol contestant linked her to a John Mayer song, blissfully unaware of the two singers’ turbulent past relationship.

During Monday night’s episode, the remaining top 11 singers were given a track to perform by each of the judges, Katy, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

They were then challenged with guessing which member of the panel had selected the song for them to sing.

Noah Thompson was given John’s 2009 hit Heartbreak Warfare by Luke, but was convinced that Katy had picked it for him.

After taking to the stage, presenter Ryan Seacrest asked him to reveal his answer.

‘I picked Katy,’ Noah replied. ‘But honestly, I don’t know. I picked Katy. That was my guess.’

Katy was seen grimacing in her seat and eventually responded by saying: ‘Noah… I feel like maybe you should Wikipedia me.’

Still totally clueless by Katy and John’s relationship history, the contestant continued: ‘That’s a big no then?’

‘It’s all a great song, you did great, but I can’t talk anymore,’ Katy cringed before taking cover under the desk.

Katy and John first met in 2012 after she split from her husband Russell Brand and went on to have a rollercoaster romance for about three years before calling things off for good in 2015.

After their split, John released his song Still Feel Like Your Man, and admitted it was about missing his ex.

Despite Noah’s ignorance, he was eventually praised by Katy for his performance.

‘Who’s going to pay for my extra hour of therapy?’ she joked, before adding: ‘Honestly, you sounded great. It’s a great song. He’s a great artist. You’re a great artist.

‘And I think that the fact that you keep on challenging yourself to grow, like, in the moment, is brilliant.

‘You’re surprising us. You couldn’t do John Denver, because that was a little bit, you know, obvious. Good for you, man.’

American Idol continues on Sunday, May 1 on ABC in the US.
