Presenter Kirsty Young will be back on television for King Charles III’s imminent coronation.
Charles, who legally became heir to the throne on September 8, 2022, following the passing of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, must now be crowned.
On Sunday, May 7, the BBC will broadcast a special concert at Windsor Castle in addition to the coronation.
The ceremonies will extend for many days, according to Buckingham Palace, and the coronation will be the first of its sort since 1953, when Charles’ mother Queen Elizabeth II was installed.
The 54-year-old former Desert Island Discs host will co-anchor the broadcast with Huw Edwards and Zoe Ball, according to the BBC.
Elsewhere Backstage, Clara Amfo and Jordan Banjo will be mingling with the performers before they take the stage in front of 20,000 spectators, including visitors from many linked organisations.
Speaking about the upcoming gig, Kirsty said: ‘I’m very happy indeed to be part of the BBC’s Coronation coverage, as our cameras capture history in the making. Ceremony, spectacle and a right royal celebration – it’s got all the ingredients of a weekend worth watching.’
BBC broadcaster Huw – who led coverage of the Queen’s funeral – added: ‘Few broadcasters have the privilege of working on a Coronation and I’m delighted to be involved. People will be relying on the BBC for coverage of what promises to be a memorable weekend.’
After taking a hiatus from hosting Desert Island Discs in 2018, Lauren Laverne took over permanently, and Kirsty left the show the following year due to illness, she will now resume hosting duties.
In July 2019, she announced that she was to stand down as the host saying: ‘Having been forced to take some months away from my favourite job because of health problems, I’m happy to say I’m now well on the way to feeling much better.
‘But that enforced absence from the show has altered my perspective on what I should do next and so I’ve decided it’s time to pursue new challenges.’
The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will be available to stream on Saturday May 6 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
