Linda Robson has recalled the awful moment a fan groped her chest while on holiday with her family.
Appearing on today’s Loose Women, the panel discussed the disappearance of Sarah Everard, and the debate around women’s safety that the case has sparked.
Nadia Sawalha spoke of the ‘sad week’ it had been ‘for all of us as a country’, when she explained that Linda had been a victim of many terrible instances.
‘A lot of them, worryingly, I’d forgotten about,’ the Birds of a Feather actress began.
‘I remember being on holiday in Cyprus a few years ago with my family and the kids were all there.
‘We walked outside of a bar and a young man said to me, “Would you mind if we took a photograph?”
‘I said yeah so he gave the phone to one of my family and he put his arm around me, and he put his hand straight onto my breast.
‘It was like… I couldn’t believe it, I just burst into tears. I was crying. I felt violated. How dare he do that?
‘He was laughing his head off, he thought it was really funny.
‘My family got really upset by it and he ran off and they were chasing him up the road and everything.’
In the days following Sarah Everard’s disappearance, women have been sharing similar experiences of not feeling safe in public – as well as steps they take every time they leave the house.
The accounts sparked Reclaim These Streets to organise a socially distanced vigil – for all women who ‘feel unsafe on the streets’ – taking place on Saturday in Clapham Common, at 6pm.
Campaigners shared on Facebook: ‘We shouldn’t have to wear bright colours when we walk home and clutch our keys in our fists to feel safe.
‘It’s wrong that the response to violence against women requires women to behave differently. In Clapham, police told women not to go out at night this week. Women are not the problem.
‘We’ve all been following the tragic case of Sarah Everard over the last week. This is a vigil for Sarah, but also for all women who feel unsafe, who go missing from our streets and who face violence every day.’
Loose Women continues on weekdays, at 12.30pm, on ITV.
