Here’s what we know about Thurwell (Picture: BBC)
***Warning: Line Of Duty spoilers ahead***
In Line Of Duty series 6, Marcus Thurwell has become the name on everybody’s lips – but it seems his time on the show is over before it even really began.
Having never appeared in any of the previous seasons, Thurwell (played by James Nesbitt) suddenly became a key person into the investigations of both AC-12 and MIT.
It’s believed he could be connected to the murder of Gail Vella, which in turn would see him covering up numerous crimes within the police force, including a child sex ring.
If true, his involvement in the key cases of the entire Line Of Duty series could blow all of them wide open.
Here’s what you need to know about him.
Who is Marcus Thurwell and how is he connected to the OCG?

Marcus Thurwell is a retired police officer believed to be ‘bent’ thanks to his involvement in numerous Central police cases which remain unsolved, and/or are high profile.
Joining the vice squad in the 90s, he looked after the death of Oliver Stephens-Lloyd, a social worker who looked into the allegations of abuse in the Sands View Boys Home.
Initially labelled a suicide under his watch, it’s now been revealed he was murdered by the OCG.
This would later tie into Operation Pear Tree, the efforts to expose a child sex crime ring which may or may not have involved corrupt police officers.
In 2003, he worked at MIT (murder investigation team), and was the senior investigative officer on the death of Lawrence Christopher, a black man who died in police custody, during which time he was mocked and ignored by the officers supposedly guarding him.

Darren Hunter, the son of OCG crime boss Tommy Hunter, was among the perpetrators, who never saw justice.
Investigative reporter Gail Vella was looking into all of these case, and how the police failings tie together, at the time of her murder in 2019.
Her findings and interview recordings were consequentially stolen.
Marcus took early retirement from the force in 2015, and was last known to be in Spain.
Is Marcus Thurwell alive?
Viewers believe one of the Spanish policemen was actually Thurwell in disguise (Picture: BBC)
In series six, episode six, AC-12 and the Spanish police worked together to conduct a raid on Thurwell’s house, believing they had found enough evidence to connect him to Gail Vella.
But instead of finding him, they found two bodies – a male and a female – in various states of decay.
It’s not been confirmed if Thurwell’s dead, with the green and black night vision footage not clear enough to be sure if the body was him.
However, viewers believe that he is still alive, having infiltrated the police team who were covered in full protective gear and face masks.
Convinced they spotted his eyes, we will now have to wait to see if Thurwell has successfully evaded the police once again.
Line Of Duty continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
