The actress has played the detective inspector on the BBC police corruption drama since 2012, and fans were left stunned by the shocking ending to this week’s episode with Kate’s tense showdown with longtime villain and caddy Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper).
Both characters were pointing their guns at each other during the gripping scenes, and viewers heard two gunshots fired as the screen went black without revealing what actually went down.
Joining Craig Parkinson – who played DI Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan in the show – on the Obsessed With… podcast, she insisted that show creator Jed Mercurio will always put the story above all else.
She explained: ‘Well you know, every episode of Line of Duty history is terrifying, and Jed is always there to serve the story, and it’s exactly what happened with Dot.
‘Dot’s time came when it was time to serve the story and that’s what Jed will always do, so I don’t wanna put anything out there, but Jed serves the story.’
While this isn’t any kind of confirmation that Kate has been killed off, Vicky at least seems certain that whatever happens will be the right call for the show as a whole.
Fans seem to think they have it figured out after the character was seen very much alive in a teaser trailer for next week’s episode, but Line of Duty fans know all too well not to make any assumptions.
Needless to say, the nation were frustrated at the realisation they’ll have to wait another week to learn the outcome of the showdown.
One tweeted: ‘OMFG you can’t stop it there. My bloody heart.’
‘Gads my heart cannot take all of this. I’m sweating, I’m yelling at the telly, I don’t know who to trust, is Kate alive? Who the f**k is H? Why do we have to wait a week please I need information,’ another pleaded.
One woman joked: ‘#LineofDuty is going to send me into labour.’
‘Nooo! You can’t keep doing this to us! We’re suffering enough this year without this tension,’ one said.
Sharing their prediction for the outcome, another weighed in: ‘I’m going to guess that someone showed up as back-up & fired at the same time as Kate. Ryan is too nesh, all mouth no trousers.’
