Stephen Graham has spoken about getting his first big break in the acting world, revealing how it it all started after a surreal audition for Guy Richie.
Speaking on Sky One’s There’s Something About Movies, Stephen recalled how he met the director by chance and secured his first major role in unlikely circumstances.
‘I went with a mate to an audition just for a ride along. It was for Guy Ritchie,’ he told host Alan Carr on the show.
‘After my mate had finished, Guy came out and said, “Are you next?” I said, “No, I’m just here with my mate.”’
The director then gave Stephen a script and convinced him to come through. As he has Dyslexia, the actor told Guy that he’d need time to familiarise himself with the scene.
Stephen added: ‘[Instead,] Guy says, “Can you improvise?” And I said, “Yeah, come on.”’
The audition of course went well and the director told Stephen: ‘Wow, great. OK, you start on Monday.”’
Stephen landed one of his first major roles through the audition, starring in 2000 film Snatch as cockney boxing promoter Tommy alongside the likes of Benicia Del Toro, Brad Pitt and Jason Statham.
The actor went on to give acclaimed performances in This Is England and Line of Duty, as well as Taboo, A Christmas Carol and The Virtues.
There’s Something About Movies is on Wednesdays at 9pm on Sky One and NOW TV.
