Liz Carr has revealed that she once handcuffed herself to a London bus as she fought for disabled rights.

The actress, best known for her performance as Clarissa Mullery in Silent Witness, shared a throwback picture of herself protesting with the Disabled People’s Direct Action Network.

Before her acting career, Liz studied law and became a campaigner for civil rights for disabled people everywhere.

The actress wrote on Twitter: ‘Today is the 25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act. Me and many others were part of Disabled People’s Direct Action Network who fought for more comprehensive Civil Rights. We achieved some historic change but fight on!’

She added a picture of herself chained to a London bus as part of the demonstrations. The image shows her being approached by a police officer while protesting on public transport.

‘A much younger me handcuffed to a London bus… with a policeman and a very large pair of bolt cutters approaching…’ she wrote.

She added: ‘Some of us handcuffed ourselves to buses. Some campaigned in different ways. Many were just trying to survive living in an inaccessible world. But together, disabled people were all fighting for our rights!’

After starring in theatre productions, Liz joined the cast of Silent Witness back in 2013 and starred on the show for eight years.

The actress recently appeared on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?, discovering that one of her family members got away with attempted murder in the mid 19th century.
