Loki season 2: Mobius had a backstory with family that could be explored in future of Marvel series

Warning: spoilers ahead for Loki on Disney Plus.

One of the most unexpected delights of Marvel series Loki was the arrival of Owen Wilson in the MCU as whipsmart TVA agent Mobius M Mobius, who develops a friendly rapport with Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

However, little is known about Mobius, other than the fact that he works for the TVA (Time Variance Authority) and has an affinity for jet skis.

While viewers catch glimpses of the former lives of Hunter C-20 (Sasha Lane) and Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) before they were recruited by the timeless organisation, they never learn what Mobius’ life was like in the real world.

Kate Herron, who directed the first season of Loki, revealed that the idea of introducing elements of Mobius’ past life was discussed while developing the series.

‘So I think for us, we had spoken about, I think there were a few drafts of the script where you did see like a family or you did see a life, but I think we all kind of decided we don’t know what it is yet,’ she told ComicBook.com’s Phase Zero podcast.

The director added that in her opinion, the mystery is ‘exciting’ as ‘it gives more road to travel with him’.

Before Mobius is pruned in Loki, an act that he believes will eliminate him from existence, he heartbreakingly says: ‘What if I had a family?’

Kate said that this moment is made even ‘more painful’ because viewers don’t know whether he did or not.

The director said that while she and the writers considered introducing flashbacks to the show, they decided in the end that it was best to leave it ‘open for future exploration’.

The post-credits scene for Loki confirmed that the Marvel series is returning for season two.

While Kate will not be returning to direct the upcoming season, could the exploration of Mobius’ backstory behind the scenes mean that fans will learn more about who the mustached mentor to Loki was before his time at the TVA?

At the end of Loki, the God of Mischief was sent back to the TVA by Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) before she killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a variant of Kang the Conqueror.

When Loki bumps into Mobius and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku), he realises that they have no idea who he is… which could mean that he’s actually arrived in another version of the TVA in an alternate timeline.

If this is the case, will Loki ever be reunited with the original Mobius or could he develop a friendship from scratch with the new version of the character?

Loki is available to watch on Disney Plus.
