A woman who was abandoned as a baby in a cardboard box near a hospital learned of a half-sister who was also a foundling in an emotional episode of Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace.

Helen, who had hoped to discover more about the circumstances surrounding her birth, was stunned when she found out that not only had her birth mother been identified but a half-sister had also been found through a partial DNA match.

Helen had described how ‘hard’ she found it ‘to not know anything at all’ about her origins, despite the loving home she found through adoption.

As presenter Davina McCall revealed what the team was able to trace, telling Helen of her half-sister Jess, who is just 14 months older than her, Helen broke down.

When it was explained that Jess also didn’t grow up with their birth mother because she was also a foundling, Helen was stunned.

She exclaimed: ‘Oh my God! You’re joking? Oh no!

‘I don’t know what to say.’

Jess had been abandoned in a nappy and vest, lying with a Sainsbury’s plastic bag underneath her.

Helen was able to discover that Jess knew who their birth mother was, having heard rumours of her parentage while growing up and then taking a DNA test to confirm her suspicions.

Their mother was young when she had both babies and had given them up, leaving them in different parts of the country.

Helen continued: ‘I’ve got a lot of questions still.’

Viewers were also caught up in the sisters’ story, with one tweeting: ‘Tough watch, but what lovely girls, I hope they share many good times ahead.’

Another commented: ‘Omg.. They look and sound the same!.. How lovely!’

One first-time viewer shared her reaction to the show, writing: ‘Never watched this before. Put it on while I had some late tea.

‘My God, what an absolute mess I am now! Overjoyed that those two lovely ladies have found each other.

‘Would warm the iciest heart!’

In a further stunning coincidence, both half-sisters discovered they each had a child from a previous relationship as well as a child with their current fiancés, with both pairs getting engaged in 2019.

Helen was delighted to learn that her half-sister was ‘just like me’, and upon seeing her photo was overcome with emotion at how she ‘looked like someone now’.

‘We’re going to be sisters together!’

The sisters are now in regular contact with one another (Picture: ITV)

She continued: ‘I just don’t feel on my own anymore.’

The sisters had an emotional meeting at the end of the episode, and are now in regular contact.
