Loose Women’s Coleen Nolan defends prisoners getting the Covid vaccine before frontline workers

Coleen Nolan has stepped in to defend the prisoners who are receiving the Covid-19 vaccine before frontline workers.

During Monday’s Loose Women, the panel were discussing whether it was right for people in prison to get their vaccine before other groups of people, like teachers.

The discussion comes after it was reported that sex offender Gary Glitter got his jab last week at HMP The Verne in Dorset.

The Covid vaccine, which began its rollout to prisons in England last month, has sparked outrage with some people.

‘I totally get the outrage,’ Coleen began.

‘I know what jab I’d like him (Gary Glitter) to be getting. However, I don’t really think it’s about that I think it’s about the prison guards and the officers and everybody in there that has to look after the prisoners.

‘And also, remember if they do get Covid and they do have to go to hospital that would be a major security risk as well on top of everything else.’

‘So, I get why it’s got to be done and for me, it’s about the people looking after them not about the prisoners themselves, of course a lot of them don’t deserve it’ she added.

‘I agree with you Coleen,’ Jane Moore weighed in.

‘It’s like anything isn’t it? I get there is a lot of people that do feel that way but if you think about it with a nationwide policy which the vaccine rollout is.

‘People haven’t got time to sort of say “Well, you can have it, you can’t have it”.

‘I think in the end, you’ve just got to go right, this group, this group, this group and of course he’s 76.’

The UK’s Covid-19 vaccination programme is well underway, with over 10 million having already received their first dose.

All those who are 65-years-old will start receiving invites to receive their vaccinations this week.

Next in line are over 60s, followed by those over 55. Finally, all those over the age of 50 will complete Phase One.

Phase two of the vaccination plan will move on to those at high risk of catching the disease such as key public service workers, but no dates have been announced.

A definitive timeline for those not included in Phase One or Two is yet to shared with the public.

Although, many are calling for teachers to be next on the list to receive the vaccines – especially since schools are expected to be the first thing to reopen after lockdown ends.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
