Lorraine Kelly blasts ‘silly’ critics as she defends only having guests of shows she likes

Lorraine Kelly has hit out at viewers who have complained that she only has guests on her programme from the shows that she enjoys.

The presenter addressed critics after interviewing actress Ellie Bamber, who is currently starring in BBC thriller The Serpent, and defended booking celebrities who she wants to chat to.

‘Ellie great to talk to you,’ Lorraine said after their chat. ‘I really enjoyed The Serpent, it was great. Thank you so much.’

She then added: ‘Lots of people say to me, “you say that you like everything!” Well, I’m not going to have somebody on that I don’t like it.

‘That would be rude and silly.’

She’s got a point…

In 2019, Lorraine won a tax battle over £1.29million by arguing that she plays a friendly persona called Lorraine Kelly on her programme.

The host was handed a bill made up of almost £900,000 in income tax and more than £300,000 in national insurance contributions in 2016, however, a judge ruled she plays a role.

‘We did not accept that Ms Kelly simply appeared as herself; we were satisfied that Ms Kelly presents a persona of herself,’ Judge Jennifer Dean ruled during the tax tribunal.

‘We should make clear we do not doubt that Ms Kelly is an entertaining lady, but the point is that for the time Ms Kelly is contracted to perform live on air she is public “Lorraine Kelly”,’ Judge Dean added.

‘She may not like the guest she interviews, she may not like the food she eats, she may not like the film she viewed but that is where the performance lies.’

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
