Who really dumped who? (Picture: ITV)
They began Love Island as one of the most solid couples in the villa and a bookies’ favourite to win the £50,000, but after realising she needed to be true to herself, Liberty pulled Jake aside to call time on their summer loving.
Or so it seemed.
‘I just don’t feel like you love me for me and I want someone who loves me for me,’ she told him.
‘I feel like I can’t do anything right. I don’t want to continue this feeling like I have to change for anyone.’
Later, dragging him to the beanbags, Liberty added: ‘I just don’t feel like, if I’m being honest, that you love me for me and I want someone that loves me for me.
‘That’s how I feel. That’s not saying you’re a bad person, because you’re not, that’s not saying I’m a bad person, but maybe I’m just not right for you.’
However, body language expert and star of Metro.co.uk’s Love or Lie Island, Judi James explains Liberty was using classic tactics urging Jake to just pay her a compliment. But it didn’t quite turn out that way.
Judi says: ’She studied him closely during their chat and created verbal pauses to act as cues for the teeniest crumbs of a compliment from Jake but although he shook his head, nothing fell out apart from an “Ok, if that’s how you feel…”
Once Love Island’s strongest couple, Jake and Liberty have split (Picture: ITV)
‘In my book Liberty must have watched in horror as the wrong ending to this scene unfolded in front of her and she was powerless to make it anything but a dumping that Jake even then claimed as his own decision, meaning he managed to rob her of even that one moment of power.’
‘In some ways he was right though,’ Judi continues. ‘Liberty did seem to just be trying to complain about his criticisms of her and I’m pretty sure she would have a settled for an “I love you and I will stop being critical because you are perfect.” And it really was Jake who just shrugged and drew things to a close.
‘Sadly for Liberty she has been caught in the crossfire between Jake and Faye, who openly admitted she didn’t like Jake last night. That meant Faye was the one saying all the right things to Liberty about being beautiful and intelligent etc. rather than Jake.
‘The biggest clue to Liberty’s problems with timing came when she said she wanted what Faye and Teddy have. Poor Liberty is like the wife who has been married ten years going to her best friend’s wedding. With those hurl-inducing final dates happening around her and everyone pretending to be in synchronized love, she feels the spark has gone out of her own relationship.
‘If she’d watched Faye and Teddy standing waist-deep in a rose swamp, reciting their ‘journey’ to one another like it was the fifteenth take while probably trying hard not to pee in the pool, the penny might have dropped for Liberty that all was not quite as idyllic as it seemed.’
Tonight we’ll see Jake and Liberty’s final moments in Love Island, as they embark on their final date before calling it quits on each other and the show.
