Love Island star Mary Bedford has paid tribute to her grandmother after learning she had died while she was in the villa.

The former islander said returning from Spain was ‘bittersweet’ as she was flying back to go to her gran’s funeral.

Mary has been focusing on supporting her heartbroken family when she got back to the UK and stepped back from social media.

Paying tribute to her on Instagram on Thursday, she also thanked her fans for their support at a tough time for her and her family.

‘Our angel on earth is now our angel in heaven??’ Mary wrote.

‘Coming off the show has been bitter sweet for me as I flew home to go to the funeral of my beautiful grandma who passed away whilst I was in the villa.

‘I’ve been taking the time since the show to mourn, reflect, and be back with my loved ones before returning to my social media.

‘I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the support I have received at this difficult time, I truly appreciate everything.’

Her message was accompanied by a picture of them both together, Mary smiling with a hand resting on her grandmother’s arm.

Fellow islanders sent messages of support, with Aaron Simpson, who she was coupled up with in the villa, sending her three love heart emoji.

Faye Winter commented ‘Love you’ while her boyfriend Teddy Soares posted ‘Sending love’.

Clarisse Juliette, who was in Casa Amor with her, wrote: ‘Love you Mary’ as Brett Staniland added: ‘Sending you and the family lots of love’.

Other islanders Amy Day, Kaz Crossley, Sharon Gaffka and Siannise Fudge also sent their condolences in the comments.

Matthew MacNabb, another Love Island star, said: ‘I’m sorry to hear’.

Mary was dumped alongside Aaron after they came bottom of a public vote just days before the final.
