Love Island 2021: What does Chuggs actually mean? Fans even more confused after hearing the story behind that nickname

Love Island’s newbie Chuggs is already the most talked about contestant just one day into his stay, and if you read his name properly then it’s easy to see why.

The 23-year-old bucket hat company owner – whose real name is actually Oliver George Lee Wallis – went on his first Love Island date last night, after the public voted for civil servant Sharon Gaffka to be wined and dined by the entrepreneur.

Naturally, her first question was: ‘Chuggs?’

‘I knew this would come up at some point so good to get it out of the way now,’ he said.

‘So it is my “nickname” (yes, he used quotation marks…), it’s like a baby name – cuddles and hug.’

While Sharon called the moniker cute, viewers at home weren’t quite as taken by it.

‘So Chuggs’ real name is OLIVER?? The plot thickens,’ wrote one audience member, while one particularly floored fan cried: ‘Woahhh hold on a second, his real name is Oliver!? And he decided to come on national television and call himself Chuggs!? I’m lost tbh.’

A third asked: ‘Excuse me your real name is Oliver ? is is not easier to go by that instead of CUDDLES AND HUGS,’ while this equally as baffled viewer added: ‘Did this guy really just say his real name is oliver? and he chooses to be named chuggs?’

While his name came as a shock to viewers, one islander who was already fully aware of what was coming was Hugo Hammond, who revealed he actually knew the newcomer.

‘I know Chuggs!’ Hugo exclaimed, before adding: ‘I know a Chuggs who was a rugby boy.

‘If he’s the person I’m thinking of, he’s posh.’

Love island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
