Love Island 2022 star Gemma Owen has revealed that her dad, footballer Michael Owen, hasn’t laid out the law ahead of her arrival into the villa for series 8.
The former England striker’s daughter is among the sizzling hot singletons on this year’s line-up, which also includes the show’s first-ever contestant with a cochlear implant, Tasha Ghouri.
Speaking ahead of entering the Majorcan getaway, 19-year-old international dressage rider and business owner Gemma said her dad hasn’t given her any rules.
‘My dad said to me, “I’m not going to tell you what you can and can’t do, it’s up to you to make your own decisions”,’ she told Metro.co.uk.
‘I’m very close with my family so I wouldn’t do anything anyway that would purposely disrespect them or embarrass them. I’m very aware of what they would potentially feel uncomfortable by.’
While Gemma admitted that dad Michael hasn’t watched Love Island before, he’ll be switching it on now.
‘He’s obviously seen a few clips, but he’s not a Love Island fan,’ she said. ‘I think he will be watching, he will be supporting. I think he’s very supportive and he trusts me not to do anything embarrass him or any of the family.’
It’s always been interesting to see how Love Island contestants with famous relatives reveal their celebrity links to other contestants – we’ll never forget the countless times Marcel Somerville shared his Blazin’ Squad link.
So, how will Gemma go about it?
‘I want to be known as my own person, not being the daughter of an ex-footballer,’ she said.
‘If they [the islanders] ask questions about my family and what my parents do then of course I’m going to be open about and talk about it.
‘I’m not going to go in there and make sure it’s the first thing I say, because I’m just not that kind of person.’
Love Island returns Monday at 9pm on ITV2.
