One of the creators of hit Netflix mystery thriller Lupin has teased that Part 3 will mark a ‘fresh start’ for the series, which will see the introduction of several ‘new characters’.

The release date for Lupin Part 2 has finally arrived, with Omar Sy returning as master burglar Assane Diop to seek out revenge against business tycoon Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre), using methods inspired by fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin.

Part 2 kicks off where Part 1 left off, with Assane and his ex-girlfriend Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) desperately searching for their son Raoul (Etan Simon), who has been kidnapped by one of Pellegrini’s henchmen.

Following the news that Lupin will be returning for Part 3, George Kay, who co-created the French show with François Uzan, spoke to about what fans can expect from the upcoming episodes.

While he refrained from sharing too many details about where the story will lead in future, George explained that Part 3 – which he said he is currently writing and expects to shoot later this year – will mark a ‘fresh start’.

‘It’ll be a fresh start in Part 3 with new characters, retaining a lot of the regular cast, but with a new branch of characters,’ he said, adding that there will also be ‘new emotional stakes’.

‘It won’t be so focused on Babaker [Assane’s late father], even though he will remain an important, emotional crutch in his memory for Assane. It’ll be different stuff, and it won’t be so focused on Pellegrini.’

George added that just like Assane taking inspiration from Lupin and Detective Youssef Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab) being dubbed ‘Ganimard’ – another character from Maurice Leblanc’s novels – there will not be any ‘direct characters’ taken from the books, as ‘the books exist within the show itself’.

Fans will likely be happy to hear that Guedira ‘will remain’ on Lupin in future, as he is ‘one of those regular ongoing important characters’, George said.

However, could viewers see a character inspired by Sherlock Holmes – or Herlock Sholmes, an individual Maurice comedically wrote into his literary works – be worked into the narrative?

‘Neither Sherlock Holmes nor Herlock Sholmes would appear because they exist within literature. It couldn’t come out of the books literally,’ the TV writer stated.

‘There’s no immediate plans, but if anyone was to appear from a Sherlock Holmes perspective it would be a fan of Sherlock Holmes, in a way that Assane is a fan of Arsène Lupin.’

The opening episode of Lupin Part 2 marks a dark turn for the series, as Assane faces the possibility of losing his son.

George outlined how Omar was involved behind the scenes in the depiction of that storyline, both feeling that it was important to highlight Assane’s role as a father, as dads themselves.

‘Even though he’s this incredible gentleman burglar who can do superhero-esque things, at the beginning of Part 2, Omar was really clear – and I agreed – that he would just be intensely focused on getting Raoul back,’ George recalled.

Parts 1 and 2 of Lupin are available to watch on Netflix.
