Sunday’s episode of The Masked Singer Australia saw Macy Gray unveiled as one of the contestants – but all the action was really happening behind the scenes.
As it turns out, no-one was more shocked to be unveiled than the I Try singer with the result, with the 54-year-old allegedly refusing to leave after being unmasked on the Aussie iteration of the hit series.
The double elimination also saw radio host Kyle Sandilands leave, but Macy wasn’t ready to go just yet.
According to judge Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, Macy – real name is Natalie Renée McIntyre – kicked up a bit of a fuss when it was her time to exit the competition.
‘Macy Gray had such passion for The Masked Singer that when she was told that she had to leave the show, which you saw last night, she refused to leave the show,’ the comedian told 2Day FM’s Morning Crew.
‘She said, “No, I’m continuing in the show,” and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, “No, you have to leave.” She said, “No, I’m not leaving.”
‘The thing is, we can’t do the end of the show unless the head comes off.’
The radio show’s co-host Ed Kavalee added: ‘So, she still had the head on, and they’re saying, “Hey, Macy-slash-Atlantis, we need you to take the head off so you can go.”
‘[And] she’s responding, “No I’m keeping the head on”?’
The awkward standoff with producers took place after Macy was unmasked as Atlantis on Sunday episode of The Masked Singer.
So far, the series has seen footballer turned actor Vinnie Jones, TV chef George Calombaris, singer-songwriter Mahalia Barnes and singer Ben Lee all unmasked.
Grammy-winning R&B star Macy is best known for her hit single I Try released in 1999 and has released a total of 10 studio albums.
The Masked Singer Australia continues Monday at 7:30pm on Channel 10
