Married At First Sight Australia star Mike Gunner admits he owes Elizabeth Sobinoff apology after defending pal Sam Ball

Married At First Sight Australia star Mike Gunner has revealed his hopes to apologise to Elizabeth Sobinoff for defending pal Sam Ball.

Season six of the dating show – which sees couples wed on the very day they first meet – was initially filmed in 2019, but UK viewers have been watching the drama unfold on E4 over the last couple of weeks.

Fans were left shocked when Sam made rude comments about his new bride’s weight on their wedding day, and went on to dismiss her during their ill-fated marriage – while embarking on a secret affair with Ines Basic.

Despite his behaviour, pal Mike continued to defend him throughout the show, and blamed Elizabeth for his antics at the series reunion.

‘Look, he shouldn’t have said those things about your body,’ the 46-year-old said at the time. ‘That’s unfair.

‘But put it this way… I’ve seen the way you treat me, so I’ve seen how you behave.

‘I can only imagine that you drove him away with that behaviour. That’s the truth of it.’

Speaking ahead of the Married At First Sight Australia Grand Reunion, which airs in Sydney over the weekend, Mike admitted his regrets over the comments.

‘I did want to tell Elizabeth that … I wanted to explain to her that I wasn’t as informed as I should have been when I defended Sam,’ he told 9Entertainment.

‘I wanted to explain to her that that’s something I regretted.’

Mike also addressed a sexist remark he made at the previous reunion, which UK viewers are yet to see – where he stated that women crumble under pressure compared to men.

‘I also wanted to explain to a few of the girls,’ he added. ‘I had made a sexist comment which … In a moment that was a very stressful moment and I felt like I was being browbeaten by the group and I wanted to say something provocative.

‘But I hadn’t given it due consideration and it came off wrong and it came out wrong. I hadn’t put a lot of thought. It was ill-considered and it backfired. That’s a regret.’

There’s no doubt that the reunion will be explosive as couples from all seven seasons come together – with some almighty showdowns on the way.

However, one of the most controversial stars in MAFS Australia history very nearly didn’t make it, as Ines had issues making her flight.

According to Daily Mail Australia, she nearly didn’t make it to Sydney, where the reunion is being filmed, as she was left sitting at the airport in Brisbane for over five hours – with producers worried over whether she would arrive on time.

Thankfully for fans, she managed to get herself to Sydney in time for filming to kick off, with the episode airing in Australia later this year.

We’re already stressed at the prospect of her back on our screens.

Married At First Sight Australia continues on weeknights, at 7.30pm, on E4.
