The composer of new Marvel series What If…? has opened up about the musical tribute featured in an episode in honour of the late Chadwick Boseman.
When episode two of What If…? was released a couple of weeks ago, fans were overjoyed and overwhelmed with emotion to hear Chadwick’s reprisal of his Black Panther character T’Challa.
The series marked the last time the role was played by Chadwick, who died in August 2020 at the age of 43 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.
During a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk, composer Laura Karpman explained that when the MCU animated project was in development, she wrote ‘an original piece of music for Chadwick Boseman’ for episode two.
While the instalment features a perfectly-matched mashup of the music from Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther, it also includes original music, as do the other episodes in the series.
‘What I can tell you in [episode two], I wrote an original piece of music for Chadwick Boseman,’ Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman said.
Referencing the scene in Black Panther when T’Challa is reunited with his late father on the ancestral plane, she added: ‘I think because of his death… he was always so regal, but it went even beyond that. He’s become one of the ancestors, in a sense, as we saw in the film.’
Laura emphasised the significance of the original music written for Chadwick, whose voice will be heard again in What If…? when different versions of T’Challa appear.
When asked how the score in What If…? may be adapted for the new iterations of T’Challa, Laura responded: ‘I think that theme is a significant thing and I can’t tell you how it will or won’t function in the rest of the show, but I was really pleased to have written that and to have been able to give the show a musical tribute to him.’
Ryan Meinerding, head of visual development at Marvel Studios, said that in his opinion, the inclusion of Chadwick’s T’Challa as Star-Lord is ‘one of the most compelling parts’ of What If…?
When the T’Challa episode of What If…? launched on Disney Plus, fans broke down in tears over the return of Chadwick’s depiction of the legendary Black Panther character.
‘Have seen #WhatIf episode 2 and I managed to make it to the dedication at the end before I broke down but then I just cried quietly all through the credits,’ one person tweeted.
‘Marvel you have no idea what this means to us, so long Chadwick Boseman we will love you forever,’ someone else wrote.
It was recently revealed that prior to Chadwick’s death, there were discussions among the creators of the series about making spin-offs with T’Challa’s Star-Lord.
Director Bryan Andrews told Entertainment Weekly that they ‘were already thinking of finding a way to do spin-offs and stuff like that of him and his crew to have these wonderful adventures’.
There are going to be 10 episodes in the first season of What If…?, with the first four available to watch on Disney Plus.
While Marvel Studios has kept the contents of the remaining episodes under wraps, fans know from teasers that they will feature zombie versions of some of the superheroes, the debut of ‘Zombie Hunter’ Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch.
What If…? is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
